Summary
“You left your phone,” Shane said, pointing at the device where Ilya had left it. It was still sitting on the table, like an innocent witness to the proceedings.
“Sorry?” Ilya said, a crease deepening between his eyes as he stared at Shane in bewilderment. “Shane, I do not understand.”
“You’ve barely made it out of bed the last few days. I come home and you’re gone and your phone is here. What was I supposed to think?!”
Ilya stared at him, and then his eyes narrowed. Hardened into something that promised a summer storm.

Summary
Ilya clung to Shane like he was drowning, felt tears finally fall against the soft cotton of Shane’s sweatshirt. Tried to allow himself the comfort that Shane was offering, tried to let the Shane’s familiar scent lull him back to an evener keel again. Tried to let the soothing words being whispered in his ears calm him.
He hated that it wasn’t enough. That Shane could read every book on the subject he could get his hands on, could talk to him, could listen to him, could do all he possibly could to help him through each bad patch. That he could be patient and tolerant and optimistic and try so fucking hard to get things right. Because it wasn’t enough to fix whatever was fucked up in his brain.

Summary
“Do not worry,” Ilya breathed against his lips.
As if Shane had a choice in the matter. As if worry hadn’t kept Shane awake past midnight for weeks, as if he wasn’t scared to leave the house for too long in case Ilya did something stupid in his absence. He’d promised he wouldn’t. Several times over. Shane wanted to believe him, he did, but the worse Ilya’s depression got the more hollow the promise felt.
“I always worry about you,” Shane said softly, pushing Ilya’s hair back from his forehead.

Summary
“Is everything ok?” Shane asked softly. It was so achingly gentle and Ilya didn’t know what to do with it.
And in another version of his life, Ilya opened up. In another version of their interaction, Ilya cuddled up against Shane’s chest like he was still small enough for it to be enough and let the whole sorry lot pour out of him. That sometimes, when he was tired and caught a flash of his reflection in the mirror, he was half-convinced he’d seen his mother. That there was a hollow in his chest and every day it gained ground. That he sometimes wondered if he had actually died when his mother had and no-one had bothered to let his body know it could stop now.
Today wasn’t going to be that version of his life.

Summary
Ilya shook his head and picked up the coffee again. Took a gulp of it like he wasn’t even tasting it, fingers shaky where they were curled around the handle.
“I will not do it,” he insisted. “I promised Shane I would not.”
How Yuna wished she could take him at his word. How dearly she wished she could just pat him consolingly on the knee, tell him she believed him, everything rose-tinted and wholesome and pretty as a picture. But Ilya was capable of being the sort of liar Shane had never managed to become, and, while she trusted him with a lot of things, she didn’t trust him with his own safety. Not right now.

Summary
The morning he’d left, Ilya had kissed him on the doorstep, still sleep-soft from the early alarm, and promised he would be just fine. Shane, someone who should really have known better, had believed him. Because he was fucking gullible as a newborn fawn at times, because he had wanted so desperately to take Ilya at his word that he’d happily tied the wool over his own eyes.
Something had slipped since then.
Something scary.

Summary
And yet here they were anyway. Ilya, sobbing into Shane’s side like the world was ending. The kitchen knives hidden away, therapy sessions twice a week, a new medication that didn’t even seem to touch how far into an episode Ilya had fallen this time around. Worried texts from Shane’s parents clogging up his phone, a thousand and one anxieties swirling in a maelstrom that never stopped spinning in his head. Apologies passed back and forth like live grenades, like they each held an infinite supply in their hockey-calloused hands.
