The door was already ajar— first responder on scene, a patrol officer, had gotten that far and then, by the look of it, decided that further intervention was above his pay grade— and Dick crouched into the gap with the flashlight already up, doing the count that had stopped being a conscious count somewhere around year three of the job: airbag deployed and sagging, cabin intact, no fluid where fluid shouldn't be, patient upright, patient's eyes already on him.
"Oh, thank God," the driver said, with the particular fervor of a man greeting a rescue helicopter, and then, immediately, in the exact same tone, without a beat of transition, "you're so pretty."
