gerard volunteers at a local animal rescue after a difficult period in his life, hoping that caring for abandoned animals will help him find his footing again. quiet and artistic, he spends his afternoons walking shy dogs, sketching sleepy cats, and slowly learning to smile without forcing it.
frank has worked at the shelter for years. he knows every dog's name, every medical history, every heartbreaking story, and somehow still has enough energy to greet each new arrival with optimism. he's loud, endlessly patient, and absolutely convinced that every pit bull is secretly a lap dog.
as the weeks and months pass, gerard finds himself falling in love with an elderly black mutt that everyone else overlooks—a dog with cloudy eyes, aching joints, and a habit of leaning against anyone kind enough to stop for a moment. frank watches gerard's walls come down alongside the dog's, and before long, gerard realizes he may be falling for more than just the shelter's oldest resident.

mikey has gotten comfortable with his new job at barnes & noble, watching his brother gerard and his boyfriend frank build a life together while trying to figure out what he wants for himself.
then pete starts showing up at the bookstore.
what begins as casual conversations slowly turns into a friendship, and eventually into something neither of them quite knows how to handle. between awkward moments, misunderstandings, and feelings neither wants to admit, mikey and pete have to figure out what they actually mean to each other.
while frank and gerard watch from the sidelines, mikey begins to realize that maybe this isn't just about being gerard's little brother and the single sibling anymore.
maybe it's finally his time, too.
