“Jay. Destroying your hands is only going to mess up your piano skills. We can’t afford this right now. How are we supposed to get a show at the Rivoli if half the band can’t even fucking play?” Jay’s hands shook a little as he reached for the bacitracin. Matt snatched it off the counter before he could even get close. “You don’t need this.”
“Matt, c’mon. Give it.”
“No! No, Jay, I will not. You need to tell me what’s going on with you. I haven’t seen you shred your hands up like this in forever. You’re supposed to tell me when your head starts getting all fucked again, man.” Jay couldn’t even look him in the face. He was afraid Matt would be able to see it in his eyes: you died, and it was real this time and I don’t know how to fucking handle it. Oh and also, it made me realize I’ve probably been in love with you for the last twenty five years.

Summary
Matt liked to think of himself as a pretty observant person. The descriptor of ‘socially inept’ may have been more accurate according to others, but that was because he simply didn’t care to be observant when talking to randos that he already knew thought he was out of his gourd.
He certainly cared when the thing being observed was Jay though. He was pretty confident that if something happened and he needed to steal the man’s identity, he could pull off all of Jay’s little quirks and put on the performance of a lifetime. Except for the piano playing. Maybe that was something to be worked on. Regardless of his scary piano abilities, Jay McCarrol was the most predictable person on the planet. Which was why Matt knew Jay was hiding something from him. Again.
