Ryland Grace is Dying.
It's not like he consciously knows that he's dying at first. It's slow, gradual in the same way a glacier moves. Depression comes for him like a reaper in the night. Touch-starvation lurks just below his skin, threatening to strangle him. Little by little until it's all piled up and there's no escape.
Simon is Dying.
He knows this. He remembers the blood filling the SM-13. He remembers yelling and screaming as he drowned. He remembers doing everything to save that goddamn black box. But now he's no longer dying. At least not physically, psychologically is a completely different story.

Ryland Grace was a very strait-laced student.
4.0 GPA, colleges vying for him to attend at their campus, a bright future shining ahead of him. He just had to make sure to keep it up and graduate without a single dent, scratch or bad mark on his collegiate reputation. Sadly that all goes down the drain (kinda, somewhat, ok mostly) when he attends his first frat house party at the behest of his twin. Which was how Ryland went from strait-laced to just 'laced'. With what? He has no clue. But hey, if he got a boyfriend out of it then who's he to refuse?

Grace was having a very bad no-good day. Luckily the day was over and he could go home. Except his bike has a flat. And now it was raining. Which meant a very cold and wet and completely uncomfortable walk home through a possibly sketchy neighborhood. Nothing bad would happen, right? Right???
But when the rain gets bad (again) Grace takes shelter under an awning where something catches his eye. What was that in the dumpster across the street?

Summary
It all begins from a simple conversation. Rocky asks about what Earth weather was like. Grace tells him. He mentions missing rainstorms and Rocky takes it as a challenge to make it happen.
Basically, Grace gets to experience a rainstorm for the first time in literal years and is very happy that his biodome team was able to recreate the petrichor smell. Because how did they test that while not being able to comprehend the sense of smell at all to begin with?
