Jamil had been half-tempted to let himself be drawn into drowsiness by the soothing rhythm of Leona's fingers stroking through his hair, splayed between them loose and soft. Jamil now felt those fingers still. Leona was quiet long enough that Jamil wondered if he would say anything at all. "What's that s'posed to mean?"
Jamil hummed, and then, keeping his tone carefully light, "This isn't going to last much longer, is it?"

Leona felt like he was losing his fucking mind.
He'd been normal, he was sure, only a couple of months ago, before summer had come crashing down, before— Leona couldn't name it. Something had changed, undeniably, even if Leona hadn't the faintest clue what, exactly, that something was.
Jamil wouldn't look at him.
That shouldn't have bothered him. Leona breathed in. He held the breath, held it until his lungs started to burn, before he let it go, slowly. He looked down, over the edge. He couldn't see an end to the pit, the darkness suffocating in its intensity. Twelve sectors, but clearly each sector held more than one story. Leona breathed in again. He'd never been prone to vertigo before. He cleared his throat. "Jamil."

The customer wore a familiar face.
Jamil hadn't seen Leona Kingscholar in years, but he was certain there would never be a time when he wouldn't recognise him. Perhaps it was the distinctive scar that split his left eye, cutting into his cheek, or perhaps it was the knife's edge Leona's focus took on when honed in on Jamil, or perhaps it was the particular brand of insouciance he carried himself with, or perhaps it was that Jamil's blood still sang bright and hot like a lovelorn teenager at the sight of him.
Jamil knew better than to harbour any illusions of it being the same for Leona.

Strange, since Leona had thought he'd scoured his kingdom, outskirts and all, to the very end. This cave was new. It had to be. Leona peered in. Light did not touch the depths of the cave, barely made it two steps in before it died away, gave in to the endless shadows. He bit his tongue against the chill that ran down his spine.
You're bein' a fuckin' idiot, he told himself.
Just go in, he told himself.
What could go wrong? he asked himself.
He hadn't thought to bring a torch. Leona had never needed a torch before. He didn't need one now.

Riddle, to nobody's surprise and everybody's dismay, was yelling.
"Riddle, please," someone was saying, and when Jamil turned his head to check, it was Azul, glaring stringently at Floyd. Jade stood passively by, hands folded over each other, and his expression was either one of mild concern or intense amusement. It was hard to tell with that one.
"I thought," Riddle fumed, loudly, "that I had made the rules abundantly clear."
"There's, like, a bajillion rules, Goldfishie," Floyd complained, but he was grinning, arm held high while Riddle tried in vain to reach the squirming thing in his hand. "Who cares about a stupid dormouse?"

His birthday had always been a strange time for Jamil.
Quiet little celebrations marked by tired lines around his parents' eyes. Najma insisting it was the dawn of a new age each and every year, until she started ribbing him for being ancient, practically a fossil. Kalim suggesting a feast each and every year. The uneasy chuckles of quiet laughter that followed.
It always felt as though it should mean something to Jamil, as though the day itself should have some special sort of meaning to it, as though each dawning year were something Jamil should look forward to. It always felt as though it shouldn't mean too much to Jamil, as though he should remember always that special was not a word he could apply to himself in any regard, as though Jamil should take it simply as another year under the Asims.
Night Raven College was, as it was in all things, a break from this limbo of a tradition.
