If he was laying down in his bed beside Hollander’s desk it usually meant that he was relaxed and not expecting any trouble.
If his dog was sitting down next to Hollander, head in his lap, it usually meant Hollander was in a good mood, perhaps celebrating something but not relaxed enough to have his dog completely off guard.

“Lots of people think I’m very ugly.” Shane said, “and want to hurt me because of that.” It took Ilya a few moments to catch on to what Shane meant. It took Shane raising his eyebrows expectantly for him to get it.
“Ah. You want me to protect you?” Ilya asked, leaning over to Shane’s ashtray.
“Yes. I need a bodyguard and someone who can be with me at all times. J.J. and Hayden are good but they aren’t always around. I’m uh, a big target for people around here, especially from Toronto and then New York is also becoming unhappy with me. I visit lots of people, and I need the protection and the help”
“What is happening in Toronto?”
“My “competitor” Dallas Kent is not happy with how powerful we are getting. Wants me dead.” he explained, not sounding particularly scared of this Dallas Kent.
“You do not think he is a threat?” he asked.
“I don’t think he’s a competitor. A threat? Maybe. I got attacked the other week, shot in the shoulder, it made Hayden and J.J. worry.”
“Ah so you want me to take bullets for you?”
“No. I want you to kill them before they get the chance.” Shane said
