Summary
How it began, nobody knows—Duncan follows a huntress, or a huntress follows Duncan. From fear blooms curiosity. From curiosity blooms unconscious courtship. Love bonds them across language and myth. Or: a very slowly-written, soft love story between a huntress and a river merman.
—
"What do you think of me?" you ask.Duncan hears the trick and cannot resent it. The river touches the lower half of him. Truth has hold of him by blood and gill and old law, leaving him nowhere to put the answer except into your waiting face.
"Is álainn thú," he whispers.
You go very still.
Duncan swallows and forces the common up after it. "Beautiful," he says. His eyes flick over you, wet hair, muddy hem, bare feet, bitten lip, the whole impossible arrangement of you on his stone. "I think you're beautiful. Brave too. A bit foolish, mayhaps."

Summary
Daeron dreams of his bride. Every year he sees her come out to the shore with her sisters. Once, when loneliness begins to eat at his heart, he gives in to the weakness and steals her skin.
—
He thinks of his darling. Of her hands plucking hair out of his eyes, resting on his clammy forehead while she coos and calls him beloved. Telling him, hush, my sweet. Draping her thighs over his hips and plastering all of herself to his chest so that her weight may absorb whatever night terror has drenched the sheet under Daeron's back. Of her feet, calloused from the wooden floor in their shared cabin and of her frame slumped on the windowsill after she's fallen asleep listening to the storm.Series
