Summary
They check the village twice for signs of remaining life, or un-life, because as skilled as the two of them might be at reading chi, the damned read as cold and dead as stone. If anything their presence triggers an absence of the Pulse, as if their frames actively repel the energy of the universe. But one hears sound over silence and light over darkness.
Absence, by definition, refuses to be defined.
Digging her automail blade into the wooden door of the storehouse, Lan Fan slices through. A few decaying corpses pile near the door, blackened hands curled inwards like withered trees in the dead of winter. She kicks at their faces and the overripe fruits of their heads collapse in on themselves. A stench she would liken to rotten soft cheese drifts upwards. Pausing for another second to confirm a lack of movement, Lan Fan drags the corpses outside and adds them to the bonfire in the village centre. After a few moments she feels Ling’s presence in the stream of chi. “We’re clear,” he says. “The rest of the village is dead. Dead dead. Deader than dead.”

Summary
When they found him facedown on the side of the trail, he and the road scarcely visible in the spring maelstrom, May dropped to the mud, ground the heels of her palms into her eyes, and pretended to weep. “Al,” she murmured. But she didn’t move so much as a centimetre towards the pale corpse; surviving this long had taught her well. Crouching by her side, Lan Fan pressed a quick kiss to her left temple.
“I’ll check.”
She and Ling closed the distance in three long strides. He lay in a still pool with his once glistening hair damped and matted around his neck. Under the orange umbrella, his skin glowed with a dark tan, unlike the bloated reddish of the damned. “He might be alive,” Ling offered. He wiped the raindrops from his forehead, strained the slickness of his bangs between his fingers. “C’mon. We’ve only got one umbrella, and May’s out there shivering.”

Summary
He blinked at her. Gold irises tinged with a gentle tint of green. The whites of his eyes perfectly so. Not a damned. Not a damned at all, where the eyes were usually the first to go, pecked out by birds or decayed into desiccated sacks sunken deep into the skull. “. . . Lan Fan?”
“You recognise me.”
Alphonse glanced downwards. At May. At Ling. At the panda runt. With a soft smile, he carefully slipped his arms around the half-siblings’ shoulders before returning his gaze to Lan Fan’s. “Give me a moment,” he answered in Amestrisian. She frowned. Closing his eyes he inhaled gently. Opened them again. “Where are we? How did you find me?”
