so here's what she learns: there's stuff she's sposed to want and stuff she's not sposed to want, and she's no good at doin what she's sposed to do. and she learns that no one's gonna let her play with their toys unless she has something to offer them in return. and she learns that if she wants what she can't have hard enough, sometimes she gets it. and in a way, that means that nothing is really impossible.
she's gonna be a firefighter when she grows up. she wants it so bad. she wants it bad enough that she knows she's gonna get it someday, but she's five, so she's not too worried about it just yet.

Barbara opens the book. It is thin enough that she can comfortably hold it open with just one hand. The other hand dashes into the fire, fingers twisting in strands of flame. As a young girl, she braided her friends’ hair; as a mother, she braided her daughters’ hair; now, in the vibrant sunset of her life, she is overcome with the urge to braid Melissa’s hair. Maybe she will, later. For now, she will read to Melissa and let Melissa stoke the flames within her.
