Arthur gives Eames a level look. “I did a background check on him, as I do with everyone you talk about. He’s safe.”
Eames sighs. He would never doubt Arthur’s judgment, of course not, “—but why here,” he whines. “He’s got all his little DJ buddies all over New York, and he picks here.”
“He just needed a place to stay. He seems nice, and it’s only for a couple days. Really, he’s your friend, I didn’t think it’d be that big of a deal.”

Eames positions his pistol along the line of his leg, thumb on the safety as he slides toward the front door. He keeps himself to the side so that his body can't block the light, tipping off whoever is out there that he's approached. It's just when he's stretching, body flush to the wall, so he can take the quickest peek through his peephole, that there's another thud, this time singular, hollow, followed by a muttered but just audible "Eames," and Eames feels his blood go cold.
