Benedetta reared back minutely, poorly concealed shock on her face.
Tears spilled down Bartolomea’s temples into her dark hair, dry like a thicket, a peasant’s hair, not meant to be a lady. “I would’ve loved you.”

Benedetta loomed over her, her own eyes white with fury, as they sometimes were for very brief moments until they calmed again. Bartolomea blinked at her submissively as Benedetta threaded the cloth through her companion’s mouth, binding it tightly behind her head. This act gentled Bartolomea, whose brow smoothed a little as she was muzzled. Her eyelids dropped. Benedetta stroked the side of her face, fascinated. Her lover had the fragility of a tsunami, bending around anything, swallowing any object or person, crushing them in her flexible, infinite insides. Benedetta was helpless against her.
