“You don’t even know me,” the kid says, voice low and unsure.
He’s not wrong, but Curt’s learned to listen to his gut, and his gut says the kid’s harmless, running from something and in over his head. Even worse, he’s gonna get all his dreams about the big city blown to bits—at best—if someone doesn’t cut him a break, tuck him away for a night or two.
So he settles back on his heels and looks the kid in the eyes. That leery look flicks over his face again when Curt sticks his hand out, but he doesn’t bolt or swing. “I’m Curt.”
That determined edge comes back, and the kid reaches out, clasps Curt’s hand in his. “Bucky,” he replies, and gives Curt one good shake before he lets go.
(Instead of hanging around Manitowoc and enlisting, Bucky runs away from home in 1938 and heads for New York. Curt's the one that finds him.)

“I should’ve let you jump.”
“Wasn’t ever me that was jumping, Bucky.” They pass a sign that reads Wrong Way Go Back. “’S just for as long as it takes. You’ll be tucked back between your silk sheets eventually.” He hits the brakes with a wrenching screech, and when Bucky casts around for something familiar, he realizes they’ve just circled the block. Someone lays on their horn behind the Jeep, but when it becomes clear that they aren’t moving, blazes past with a pointed rev of their engine. Bucky stares at Curt across the console, and Curt grins back, impervious to Bucky’s rage.
“What are you, the Ghost of Christmas Could Have Been? Ghost of Christmas Your Ticket’s Punched? I already know what I’m owed, I don’t need the goddamn glimpse.”
“Tell you what: when you’re ready, you ring a bell. You’ll know the right time.”
Bucky snorts. “And you’ll get your wings, that it?”

“John,” a soft voice murmurs to his right, calling him in.
It’s Buck. He knows without even having to look. Even so, John turns to look at him, peeling his gaze away from the disgruntled alpha and turning his back blatantly. Buck watches him with something unreadable, pupils blown wide in the poorly lit street.
“Buck,” John says slowly, working the name over his tongue like he’s just first hearing it, drawing out the syllables. “You tryna rein me in?”Buck tilts his head, eyes glinting in the moonlight. “Do I have to?” He looks bored and vaguely irritated.
John sighs, maybe a little dramatically, and slings an arm around the alpha’s shoulders, easily achieved with the slight height advantage he has over him. “You’re no fun.”
“You’re too much fun.”
He grins. “No such thing.”
Buck frowns. “There is and you’re it.”
