Her head smarted from the impact from her abrupt awakening but she didn’t notice over the sound of her chest heaving in a desperate attempt to regain her breath. She still felt the restriction on her neck from the rope that choked her and robbed her of words.
Her voice croaked as she let out a painful, dry-eyed sob, burying her face in one of many large, plump pillows cluttering her bed.
