The winter air in Chicago is just as hostile as the people, but there's always a blissful handful of days between Fall's pretending the world's a pretty place and Winter's first snow reminding you how much it ain't.

Summary
Reasoning, pattern recognition, whatever else fear has decided to call itself tonight aches at him, gnaws at his insides like it has since the moment Nathan had decided to trust him. It burns deep in his lungs, shortening his breath, telling him to keep anything so painful as love far away from his wandering hands and fickle tongue, because everything he touches with those extensions of himself grows sharp, twisted, buries itself into the things he holds dear and draws blood until there is nothing else left of them.
But there is a look on Nathan’s face when he tilts his head up from a spot on his ribs, softening and wary like the same defenses Dupont is feebly debating whether or not to throw to the wind are melting, bit by bit, behind his eyes, and suddenly any attempt at rationale fizzles and dies.
He is glad to see it go, especially when just as it opens its mouth for a parting word, Nathan points to his lips with a hesitant finger, and Dupont can hold himself back no longer.

Summary
Just like every other time Jack came back from a solo job or a quick ride into town, Eddie felt himself exhale at the sight of him. He couldn’t even make out any facial features yet, but he’d be damned if Jack Valentine wasn’t the best thing he’d ever laid eyes on. Somewhere behind that shadow sat a strong jaw and a kind smile and a kiss that made Eddie’s knees weak, even after all these years. That was enough to make a lazy, sunset-stained smile waltz across Eddie’s face.
A chill knocked Eddie’s smile dead.
He would’ve known Jack’s silhouette anywhere. He would’ve also known what it looked like travelling normally.
