“You’re wondering why I’m doing this,” Everley murmurs, pitching her voice lowly enough that Quarrel won’t hear. “I don’t blame you. Living creatures naturally look for reasons—patterns, really—to explain why they suffer. That’s what religions are for.”
Shadow blinks at her. He’s fighting to stay present and alert, but it’s only a matter of time before Pedante’s will overtakes him and he fades into more of a haze. He’ll enjoy this more, once he does.
“It’s my fault,” she tells Shadow, turning his face back to the tree and lowering her mouth nearer to his ear, so she can’t see his dark, hateful eyes anymore. “I let you stray from Pedante’s light. But we’re fixing that now.”
Shadow jerks his head away from her lips. If his hands were free, he might have covered his ears, but she’d already seen to that. He doesn’t have a choice except to listen to her. (He can’t possibly choose wrongly, Pedante’s remembered voice tells her.)
