The first time Laurent saw Elliot, he thought: Oh, he’s definitely Damen’s type. Tall. Stylish. Blue eyes. Blond-ish hair. Smelled like bergamot and disposable income. He ran the art gallery across the street and always wore scarves that looked too expensive to exist in a world with crumbs. Damen, of course, noticed him immediately.
“Who is that?” Damen whispered one morning, eyes glued to the door.“That’s Elliot,” Laurent said tightly, slicing cranberry-orange loaf with more force than strictly necessary. “He sells oil paintings of sad horses and overpriced ceramics.”
“So... rich.”
“Obnoxiously.”
Damen grinned. “I like that in a man.”

He breathes, but it is shallow and uneven and absolutely nothing like the ocean that Damen loves so much. Damen had been so excited to show Laurent the tides, the shells, the starfish that had washed up the shore. Laurent has watched him fall asleep on the beach, lulled by the endless and even calm of waves. Laurent has watched him watch the summer storms, unafraid of the whipping winds and piercing rain, the lightning blinding as he gazes out the window, unrelenting and fascinated.
He breathes and it is weak, unreliable.
Clearly, Laurent has learned nothing.

Damen looked up. Laurent’s gaze was level, and very blue.
“Broadly,” Laurent said, “is it the pain? Or the being told what to do?”
And suddenly Damen was finding it very hard to breathe. Laurent simply waited him out, his gaze fixed on Damen’s face. Damen couldn’t help remembering Nik’s description from last weekend. High alert.
“Both,” he said finally. Laurent gave a short nod, like he was filing that away. “And…”
“And what?”
Damen licked his lips. “And you, I think.”
This time the wash of pink over Laurent’s cheeks was unmistakable. Damen reveled in it, even as he fought the urge to squirm at his own confession.
“Noted,” Laurent said, very evenly.
