Summary
Chuuya’s hair tickles the bottom of Dazai’s chin, and he can feel their breath against his neck. It grates on him, vexing and irksome, too prominent to simply ignore. His mind is making up sensations, too—bugs crawling across his arms and roaming his back. He’s not stupid enough to believe it’s real, but that doesn’t make the feeling go away. The backs of his hands itch. He’s overcome with an irresistible urge to dig his fingernails into his shoulders, to dispel the creeping insects that don’t exist.
On Chuuya’s other side, Kunikida lies on his back, head turned towards Chuuya and Dazai. One of his arms pillows Chuuya’s neck.
It’s probably just the 2 AM talking, but Dazai’s hatred for himself has spiked significantly. He needs to get out of this bed. He needs to get out of this room.
or: dazai can't remember the last time he slept through the night. if anyone were to ask, he'd say it's not a problem. but when the rest of the world is asleep, humanity is a hard thing to come by.

Somehow, he feels like he’s been here his whole life even though it’s only been four months. Working with Gin and Hirotsu and even Higuchi and Akutagawa is different from working with the Hunting Dogs. It feels more natural here. And he hates it because he does love the rest of the Hunting Dogs—they’re basically his family at this point.

Dazai slumps. “Chuuya’s ignoring me,” he admits. He doesn’t say any more, because that truth alone is risky enough. If he continues speaking, he’ll end up admitting how much it hurts that Chuuya won’t talk to him, how he misses Chuuya, how he just wishes he knew what he did wrong. How he hates Chuuya so vehemently it burns his chest, but the fear that Chuuya might hate him in return splinters each of his ribs and sinks a knife deep into his heart.
Dazai cannot fall victim to a direct attack from Chuuya’s ability, but he imagines this is what it feels like to have his weight pulled downward, crumpling beneath the unseen pressure of For the Tainted Sorrow until it’s stolen all the oxygen from his lungs and finally granted him the sweet release of death he so longs for.
“Ah,” Ango says, and then he drains the rest of his drink.
