Summary
He could be wrong - it could've very well been a normal phobia - but he'd known better than to pry about it, even back then, when he had no idea how much his curiosity would eventually cost him. It's why he strongly doubted she would want to go through the whole ordeal with the moths again, even now that she knows they wouldn't harm her. Something Darlington couldn't guarantee for most other kinds of magic, and now - for himself.
She wouldn't just take the moths herself and put the tattoos back on, would she? So how did it happen?
Even his dull demon brain could manage the simplicity of those spell requirements. Only human saliva reverses the magic. The realization sort of makes him short-circuit.
"I'm feeling a little under the weather. Call me for dinner?", he starts climbing the stairs to the Virgil bedroom.
Or: It's only been a couple of days since the second descent into hell, and Darlington seems to be coming down with something. He also sees Alex's tattoos for the first time since he erased them on the day they met. It forces him to confront a very ugly part of himself.

Summary
The Lethe Museum is a prestigious post for one lucky Yale graduate every four years. The Museum holds a collection of oddities and offers special exhibitions from its own warehouses and the collections of the Ancient Eight. Darlington's tenure as curator is nearly at an end, which means its time to train the next curator, Galaxy "Alex" Stern. It's a task he was always prepared for, but Alex is not what he was expecting. She is the exact opposite of every other Yale graduate he's ever met. Perhaps it's the breath of fresh air that Lethe needed. Perhaps she's just what he needed... Too bad there are the little matters of his honor and the Lethe code of conduct standing in his way.

Summary
"You can take turns behind the wheel, you know."
"I don't know that there's two of us in that sense. I find it difficult to draw a clear line between where I end and something else begins. It's all me now.", he explains grimly and pointedly ignores the proximity, "To make use of your metaphor, I am afraid he won't be satisfied with taking turns."
Alex rolls her eyes.
"You love being vague about it like it's somehow embarrassing to be part demon, but to make use of my metaphor, what does he actually want?", she cuts him short, sharp as a blade, "And what do you want? Is it different things or is it just that you only want, and he takes?"
Or: Darlington feeds off Alex's emotions and is confronted, not for the first time, with the reality of himself - the man and the monster. Alex doesn't fear anything after what she's been through.

Summary
Alex Stern wasn't the only Dante that had been foisted upon Darlington.
Evelyn Bellini was chosen also.
To Alex, Evelyn is everything she is not: high school graduate, more than just a working knowledge of Latin, unable to see Grays like she can. She's...normal. But she's got secrets, too, and those secrets will change everything when they finally come out.

Summary
Darlington gave a tart grin. “In-N-Out wouldn’t exist if not for this place here in New Haven. Where’s your respect for tradition?”
”Tradition, as they say, is just peer pressure from dead people,” Alex concluded with a crunch of potato chips.

Summary
"Darlington, you of all people should understand that I couldn't mess this up even if I wanted to."
She was right. Without Lethe, neither of them would be here. It would be foolish to jeopardize their positions in any way. They were student and mentor, Dante and Virgil. He should've stepped down after Halloween in the first place, not put himself alone in a room with her.
But maybe he wanted to make this kind of mistake. It would be worth it.AKA

Summary
"(...) She might’ve been relieved she didn’t have to sort through hundreds of candidate CVs but I suspect she too must’ve been upset she didn’t get to choose her Dante-"
"They used you. Found you at your most vulnerable, offered you everything you could've ever wanted, gave you a way out of your misery.", she scoffs, her fists clenching. Empathizing with him now helps her empathize with herself.
"Just like you, except you wanted a normal life and I wanted the opposite."
Or: Alex has seen Darlington's memories, held his soul in her hands and carried it out of hell. Darlington has seen Alex's memories, become tethered to her and chosen to serve her. But they've never sat down to talk about it, or about those very long months he was "in Spain" - the 's' is silent. They go out on a date in a fancy restaurant and say what's on their minds.

Summary
“He’s burning up.” Alex says. “He was going to come down for dinner, and then he fainted.”
Darlington sits up shakily. He lists a little to one side, then rights himself. “He can hear you,” he mutters. “It’s fine.”
For the second time that night, Alex feels the floor drop away from her. “It’s not fine,” she hisses. “You just passed the fuck out, Darlington. What the hell is wrong with you?”
Darlington comes down with a nasty case of hell fever. Things get bad, and then they get much worse. Alex tries to hold on.

Summary
In the aftermath of Manuscript's Halloween party, Darlington is having trouble sleeping. Maybe that face of fog messed with him more than he thought, or perhaps it has to do with his unconventional Dante who keeps showing up in his dreams.
