In his first moment of quiet all evening, Noel weaved through the now vacant chairs towards the bar. If there was one reason to bother with any of these events, it was the free drink.
“Noel! Congratulations on the award.”
Wheeling around to the familiar voice, Noel saw Paul Weller. Paul fucking Weller, having apparently having sought Noel out. Quickly, he schooled the disbelief off his face and aimed for his more casual, crooked smile.

Perched on one of the spare amps, just out of reach, there’s a teenage boy sitting with his legs dangling, trainers scuffed, fringe falling into his eyes. Sixteen, maybe seventeen. Noel knows that boy — knows the slope of his shoulders, the guarded expression that pretends not to care. It’s him. Younger, smaller, watching with the same mix of boredom and anticipation he used to feel just lazing out on his bed thinking of chords, when he was still just a lad with a brand-less guitar and a head full of songs.
