    She is standing in the doorway to her childhood bedroom, her parents pretending not to linger on the landing behind her, wringing their hands. Funny how time works—before, it was just her bedroom, because before she was still a child. Not so any longer.

    “We kept everything ready for you,” her mom says from somewhere behind her. Rachel can’t bear to look at her, suddenly. Can’t stand that she’s here, a new-minted woman in an old, old room. She was ripped unceremoniously out of her place in this house and this world and this bedroom, and now her ragged edges have frayed down to nothing, and she won’t fit back in the hole left behind anymore. Not really. Not truly.

    (or, rachel is home now, except home, she's learning, is a much more difficult concept than she ever dreamed.)
