The woman let out a dry chuckle. "Oh, really? What are you, some kind of post-apocalyptic Gen Z saint with a savior-complex?"
"Jesus," Ava muttered. This was not going well.
"Really, I want to know," the woman continued with a mocking grin. "Are out here every day helping strangers for fun, or is it just my lucky day?"
"Or," Ava snapped, "I can just walk out and let you bleed to death in this shitty casino with your clicker friends. Whatever floats your boat."
That earned her a scoff.
"This is not a shitty casino. It's the Palmetto."

Twenty-six years into the apocalypse, and one year after her last interaction with another human being, Ava meets Deborah.
And maybe it has something to do with the fact that Ava hasn’t spoken to anyone in a year, but there’s something about Deborah that makes her feel like there might still be some fun left in their dead world.
