Matthew tried to keep his eyes ahead, or keep his thoughts away from his companion and instead on what had happened in Scarnsea, but his gaze kept drifting to Jack. He had never expected to warm to him and yet he did have a certain charm; rough charm, certainly, but charm nonetheless. And he was so quick to defend me when Jerome spouted threats at dinner, he thought. He could feel Jack’s hand pushing him back as he got between him and any danger even now. Useless Matthew.
