When mothers see their babies for the first time, their brains rewire themselves to love them, no matter how ugly or gross or inconvenient. They have to, for survival.
Humans will change on a biological level based on how you treat them.

“I’ve just seen a clip of when Chadwick was by himself, talking to the chat,” One of the boys is talking, voice too loud in Max’s ears through his headphones. Max can’t really bring himself to care, though, his mind somewhere else entirely. Maybe he shouldn’t have returned to the stream, but he did want another stint, and he was enjoying himself. “He goes,” he continues, “Do you think Lestappen is real, guys?”

Summary
Max has left his racing past behind him, back when he was 16. But it seems, It hasn't left Max. Charles has to leave for a two-week trip for meetings and Max stays back while his past comes back to haunt him. He goes back to racing (but illegally this time) to save Charles from trouble. With that, his mental and physical health goes on a downward spiral and when Charles comes back, he's left to fix something that Max had thought was fixed a long time ago.
