Millennia before Palpatine's Empire, the Galactic Republic faces a resurgent Sith Empire that vies with it for command of the galaxy's fate.
The Rule of Two is as yet undreamed of. Instead, the Sith Order numbers in the thousands as the Jedi did. This multitude is diverse, divided against itself in political intrigue, and in its reverence of individuality, riven by competing philosophies of what it means to be Sith.
In theory these divisions occur within bounds overseen by the Dark Council--as long as the Councillors remain strong enough to hold on to their power and to their lives. Of course when it comes to the Sith, perhaps the cardinal rule is that all rules are meant to be broken.
Tarssus Kallig, a rising power among the Sith, has found one of the most daring ways of all to break the rules. To survive and preserve not just the empire of his birth but the galaxy as a whole, the young heretic Kallig must operate right in the heart of the dragon's lair. For it may turn out that who leads the charge becomes even more important than the how.
