Nick was very good at avoiding feelings. It's just another reason why his marriage fell apart and most past acquaintances hated him or had no opinion left to share. He told them in the beginning that, after and if they escaped, he'd be on his way. It was a mutually beneficial relationship, where they all stayed alive and then fucked off in the end. Three years go by after this arrangement ends, Rochelle marries Francis, and Nick realizes no, it's not that easy, and he's missed out on quite a bit. Rochelle refuses to let him off the hook, and tasks him with visiting Ellis while he's in Georgia.
Nick blames his agreeing on the peanut butter whiskey.

For two years the mechanic has fawned over the Car salesman and his raw talent of swaying rich yuppies into buying cars they don't need. Nick, however, has probably noticed the grease stains on his shirt before he's noticed the actual person in the coveralls. It wasn't until Nick started catching on to Ellis's crush that he decided to start seeing the younger man, but Ellis would be his last "hoorah" before he enters the dating world.
