They have the conversation twice.
“There will be a time”, the boss says, “where you will meet the version of me who doesn’t know anything about the future, about the work we do. About us. He won’t know the words or the steps yet. He will make mistakes.”

Summary
And, when the tapestry of destiny is complete, the Protagonist will come back to fulfil the promise he has made to himself. He will devote the rest of his life to unravelling the ugly knot in this grand artwork — to undo Neil’s death in Stalsk-12, on that fateful day.

Summary
"So. What's on the schedule for today?" He asked, cutting up his sausage and taking a bite from it. The Protagonist paused before shrugging, swallowing his food before he spoke.
"Surprisingly... nothing. Our next intel drop isn't for two days."
"Oh." That was surprising. They never had free days. This wasn't exactly the kind of job where you could book off a two week holiday.
"We should do something."

Summary

“There is no ‘right time.’ All we have is right now. The future isn’t guaranteed to anyone, so let’s live while we can.”
Neil's recruitment hadn't been easy. A mysterious man entered his life right when he needed it most, but with that came secrecy, trust issues, complicated feelings, and experiences he never could have anticipated.

Summary
“I’m sure the pleasure is all mine,” Neil says, flashing an iteration of charming smile that he censors ever so slightly so he doesn’t look absolutely desperate.
Christ, he thinks as he sits. He really hopes he isn’t going to look at his wrist later to find ‘New Boss’ emblazoned there. He’s no stranger to humiliation but he’s not going to last a week in any sort of task-force situation with ‘New Boss’ written on his arm. Even a week’s pushing it; if he saw the dude parachuting from a plane in front of him had this shit across his neck he’d balk from hysterics.

Summary
The possibility of not recruiting Neil at all is never discussed.
It brings up a lot of questions, the protagonist thinks later that night, staring up at the ceiling. He will recruit Neil because he knows who Neil will become. It’s a stunted paradoxical little loop. How did it start?
The protagonist knows how it will end.
Unless…unless he walks away. Lying in the dark, wide awake, the protagonist is tempted.
(Can we change things, if we do it differently?)
But…
“What’s happened, happened,” the protagonist reminds himself.
Besides (selfish, selfish). He wants to see Neil again.Somewhere in between the end and the beginning, Neil and the protagonist manage to find a little time.

Just that thing where the agent on a mission sends a horny voicemail back to his lover. Except--and here's the kicker--the Protagonist is absolutely certain he isn't sleeping with Neil. (Yet.)
