Lena hums. “And here I thought you were supposed to be saving me, tonight.”
Kara blinks up from the food to Lena’s chest—oops—before meeting Lena’s eyes. “Save you?” she says. “Haha. What. Like, uh, like Supergirl? Or whatever?”
“No, silly,” Lena says, smiling so fondly at her that it makes Kara a little lightheaded. “As my bodyguard, of course.”
“Oh right! That’s me!” Kara grins, puffing out her chest and clicking her heels and keeping her eyeline firmly above Lena’s shoulders. “At your service, ma’am. Ready to guard your—um.” She halts. “Your… body,” she finishes, flinching.

He nodded quickly, almost stumbling over the words as they tumbled from his mouth. “We’ve caught it early, that’s good. There are several options, but I recommend beginning a course of chemotherapy immediately. We can arrange-”
She lifted a hand, not to silence him in rudeness but because she could not bear to hear him recite details she had already dissected a thousand times in her head.
“That won’t be necessary,” she said quietly. Her voice sounded clinical, as if she were discussing the case of someone else entirely. A patient she had no personal attachment to, a specimen under her microscope rather than the container of her own life.
The doctor looked startled, confusion flashing across his face. “Miss Luthor, I know this is difficult to process-”
“I know,” she interrupted, softer now, almost tired, almost weary. “But I know how this works. You can spare me the details.”
