The freckled skin, the wrinkles around his eyes and eyebrows, the expressiveness of his features. The scars and the small indents that when John really thought about it could look like the shape of that skull mask, but he wasn’t really sure. It was there, when Simon needed a short break on a bench, laughing at a comment John made, that it hit John. A warm feeling spreading in his chest like dye in water. He didn’t feel lonely.
Because Simon had filled that void with his jokes, his stories and warm timbre voice. Living in John’s mind even when he was at home watching TV or making dinner for one. It was a slow realisation, warm and sappy slithering through his veins and arteries. Smiling wider despite the conversation not really catering for it.

Ghost’s virginity is frankly nobody’s fucking business. His entire personal life is nobody’s fucking business and that attitude had served him fantastically, don’t get attached, don’t get more than superficial, and it won’t ever be an issue. “Home sweet home.” Soap grins, elbowing the front door open. The air is a little stale, and there are still dust sheets covering most of the furniture, but there’s a warm light trickling through the windows, and a view out across the Cotswolds.
“I could’ve carried one of the bags, Johnny, I’m not a complete invalid.” Ghost sulked for most of the drive, tutted when Soap had needed to lean over to do his seatbelt for him.
“No, ye couldn’t.” Soap chides, dropping the two duffels in the hallways and rounding on Ghost to coax him into a hug. “Doctor’s orders, remember?”
“Fuck doctor’s orders.” Ghost grumbles, he won’t though, he’ll listen and obey and heal properly even if Soap has to tie him down and make him.
