Daily, Dan is bombarded with fleets of thoughts that aren't his. They show him the vilest side of humanity. No wonder he doesn't hold his species or himself in particularly high esteem. He has accepted that there are no truly good people in the world.
But then there's Phil, who just won't bow down to this rule. It's annoying, really. And Dan doesn't like it at all. Why would he?
