    "제발 입 좀 다물고 하면 안 될까?"

    "뭐?"

    몽연이 불퉁한 목소리로 말을 이었다.

"왜 자꾸 닥치라고 하는 거냐? 색사를 즐겁게 하려면 어느 정도 대화도 필요한데."

이자하가 영 이해가 안 간다는 듯이 말했다.

    "심리전이라도 한다는 말이냐."

    Summary

“Not today. Prove me wrong, Xu.” There is desperation, here, bleeding and weary, begging to be noticed. Du Ruo isn’t familiar with it; the feeling makes her chest cave in, her breathing short, her hope left in the town about to burn behind Xu.

(No matter how false, with enough faith, a story has no choice but to come true.)

    “I don’t believe in you.”

Xu sighs. “Your words! They sting. Be careful with my heart, you’re holding it.”

“I can’t possibly be holding your bleeding heart; everyone else already has it,” Du Ruo scoffs. In part it is true; this whole farce, after all, is caused by Xu’s endless insistence to spare everyone’s hurt in return for hers. Every day Du Ruo has watched her. Every day it is becoming clearer that one day it will cease to go anywhere. “Try not giving it all away.”

    Part 1 of magnolia

Here’s the thing about code that everyone learns eventually, that Matt learned at eight years old: it is always your fault. Code doesn’t bend and code doesn’t bargain. It is made of hard, indivisible, mean little atoms of fact. If you can’t find the flaw, you need to look harder closer higher farther, you need to think better, you need to wise the fuck up, you need to pull your head out of your ass. Think. You need to learn to bend your mind around those mean little atoms like spaghetti around a fork. You need to berate yourself. Because the rules are the rules are the rules.

Mello is like code, that way. His rules are his rules are his rules and you live your life around them like rings around his fingers. The questions Matt doesn’t ask. The things he doesn’t say.

Raiden Makoto giggles, one leg kicked into tomorrow and the other bent against the present. Each line of dark hair splays into seconds. Her being is timescattered the same way children scatter playing cards on summer evenings.

Ei looks at her miso. The sun is setting outside again, fourteen seconds earlier than yesterday.

Part 3 of hourglasses are shaped by the hands of nonbelievers

Chiyo screams with the voice tuned for song. She is still melodious as Ei punctures seven purifying wounds into her trembling form; bullets of love. Her lips are stained with it. Her eyes are so, so red. Ei cannot be stayed. Cherry blossoms all around them.

(More and more, the sun sets red upon the adriatic.)

    Summary

Dick wakes up, probes his side. Under the lucid heaviness of sleep, he’d dreamt his ribs gone, wound sticky. In his dream, Jason’s fingers had touched a place in his chest cavity that will never be touched again. He’d taken the knife– a jagged hunting blade– and sliced Dick from pelvis to throat. Gooey with blood, he had dipped his fingers into Dick’s stomach and started to rip at the fine tissue around his organs. Dick had gasped wetly as his lungs were probed, his liver given a squeeze.

“Mon petit aile,” Jason whispered as he unspooled Dick’s intestines, but it was a Jason who had been allowed to grow older. A Jason who loomed over Dick with the strength of a grown man.

In the dark of his bedroom, Dick does not curl up, swell and cry, but instead– he desperately, despairingly, achingly wishes for Jason to touch him again. To make him hurt, like he’s always made Dick hurt. Not just his ribs but his cheek, his hand, his soft insides.

To take everything that’s owed to him.

This is Dick Grayson: a desperate animal chasing after dead boys that remind him of his mother. He sinks his teeth into skin and calls it love; he has never known how to love any other way.

Jason’s dark eyes look to Dick. He’s a little animal, cornered beneath the stare of a larger one.

“Why do you hate me?” he spits. “I didn’t steal the suit. I didn’t beg for it. I’m just trying to do what you did— I’m just trying to help.”

“Mon petit aile,” Dick wishes he had said all of those years ago. “I don’t hate you. I could never. I miss you— you are the hole in my chest. You are the last step on the stairs I keep missing. I miss you like that goddamn dragonfly Caesar made for me so many years ago. Come back to me, my little hawk. Even just as a shadow. I won’t ask for anything more than that— just come back.”
