    Luca turns his gaze to Shu. Like the rest of them, his hair is matted, colors faded from his highlights. The fire illuminates the dirt and blood that’s smeared across his cheeks, his neck. And when he breathes, chest rising and falling, the line of his collarbones are sharp, too sharp. But in the light, his eyes shine a bright purple—still vivid, still beautiful. Still full of life.

    “Maybe you’re immune.” Luca’s voice is light with hope. “I mean, you’re not showing any symptoms. Maybe you—”

    “It’s only been a few hours,” Shu cuts in gently. “And you’re the one with eight-leaf clover luck, not me.”

    Luca tries to smile, but it falters. That so-called luck has always felt like a cruel joke, letting him stumble through life untouched while others bled for it. What was the point of surviving, if it meant losing the one person who made survival feel like something more than endurance?


    Zombie apocalypse AU, in which Shu is bitten and Luca sees him through to the very end.
