The first brush of their lips together sends a shiver down his spine. It’s soft, sweet, tentative, and when she moans against his mouth, something inside of him snaps. He grabs her face between his hands, holding it steady while he devours her. Their tongues become embroiled with one another, and the sounds she’s making—god—he wants to eat her alive, all of a sudden. When he feels her body pressed into his, her soft breasts rubbing against his torso, his arousal spikes. But this isn’t his first rodeo. He’s not twenty three.

“Read it again Pen,” Colin said softly.
She looked back at him, eyes wide and blinking, biting her lower lip, drawing in his attention.
Until today, not an impure thought had passed through his mind of Penelope. He suddenly felt like the wind was knocked out of him. His eyes snapped up to hers, her blue eyes wide and blinking rapidly. He wasn’t sure what to say. It felt like the air had changed around them. All he could think about was her in that moment. Touching her hair, caressing her cheeks, kissing her lips.
He took a deep breath. He could not make sense of the impulses he was having, “please, read it again.”
She swallowed, turned back to the page, and started reading it again. He listened to her sweet voice recite the words of Byron. Did she pick this poem on purpose? ‘How could she’ he reasoned, ‘she’s never seen this book, how would she know’. He was so lost in thought; he didn’t realize she had finished. He wasn’t ready for her to stop reading, what was the last part? She looked over at him again. Had she moved closer to him? Or was he leaning into her?
“Again,” He said, wondering if she could hear him as it came out almost as a whisper.

“The columnist who writes the Love and Sex column has had a medical emergency,” Penelope explains as she takes a fortifying sip of wine. “They want me to take over writing the column for her for an indefinite amount of time while she recovers.”
Francesca gives Penelope an appraising look. “You’re nervous about this? Why?”
“I suppose it’s two things,” Penelope says, looking into the middle distance between her friends. “First, it’s a lot of work.”
“You’ve never been afraid of hard work, Pen,” Eloise offers.
“Thank you, but second, and probably more importantly, I don’t think I have the requisite experience to do it well.”
“Why? You’re a great writer,” Colin says from the corner where he’s been uncharacteristically quiet all night.
Penelope feels herself flame red. “It’s not my writing that’s the issue.”

Besides, he had to know if Lady Whistledown, the lady palm proven impossible to kill, had finally received comeuppance for her addiction to talking shit.
Mostly, though, he was resolved.
Colin didn’t want to dance around this anymore. He ascribed to Harry Burns’ school of thought on romance and every moment spent trying to feign indifference felt like a waste. He was going home, and he was going to make her witness what she did to him. No more pretending.
