    Summary
“Mister Nero. Is there, perhaps, a memory you’d like to part with?”

A couple of memories come to Nero’s mind. The many sights of Brad’s wounded body, of the scars he refuses to heal with magic. The anxiety settled in his gut as he watches over the first rays of daybreak and the beginning of a new raid. The many voices of the Iestrum carrying these words carefully thrown at him—what a stupid dream, Nero—to the four corners of the Cavern of Time.

      “Nope,” Nero lies.

In which Nero gets an offer he’s not sure he should refuse.

    Summary

Figaro and Oz’s sternness stutters minutely. It is Figaro who speaks, none of that rational fear in his voice. “You’re in a painting. You’ll lose.”

White reaches for Snow’s hand as Snow reaches for him. It has so often come to this. Two against two. Two against the world. Two that are, in truth both horrific and incontrovertible, one.

    Summary

    Oz,

Time has passed since my last letter—rather, note; it was too crude to have been a letter—to you. I wanted to apologize. I said unnecessary things. Live away from us if that is what you want. If you should wish to return, you will always be welcome home. I doubt the twins have written you to assure you of the same, but it is what they feel. They are only too prideful to tell you.

Although I’m not telling you either, am I? I only have writing.

Correspondence over years and years and years.

    Summary

Mithra nods to himself. “I had heard of your exploits. I don’t understand how you did not all kill each other, but you had something. Then Snow, White, and Figaro took it away. I would be furious as well.”

He plucks the glass away. “What was she to ya?”

    “Hmm?”

“Tiletta. What was she to ya?”

Mithra opens his mouth. Closes it. Opens it again. “She was…” Says nothing. Rubs his neck. Mutters, “She was there, where I happened to be.”

Bradley can understand that much. You don’t always need a name for everything. Feeling it is enough.

    Summary

After righting himself on the broom, Oz takes the glass. Though he does not drink. There is another thing that he is unsure of how to word: that in being Northern, power and personality so unlike Figaro’s, and in having Mitile’s mistrust, he strengthens Figaro’s own lies about himself. Figaro wants the boy to hate the Northern wizards. Figaro wants to distance himself from the North of his past. So let him have it all.

Figaro watches Oz deliberate whether he should drink or not as if there is an option to refuse, and an anger swathed by envy lives and dies pathetically in him, dwindling to helpless acceptance that he has never understood Oz. Nor will he ever—if Mitile doesn’t kill Figaro, his own body will. His magic, once hailed as divine, then meted as hellish, and, in repentance, a practiced aid in healing, is turning against him at last.
