Summary
Ludmila. I’d locked even her name away, buried it as if that would allow me to deny its existence. But these things only put down roots, like something of the Wood, exerting their influence from a place we can no longer see.
Kasia is corrupted beyond saving, and yet our hero can only watch as Agnieszka finds this out for herself. Unsure of how to help or comfort her, Sarkan ends up remembering a time when he, too, searched for a cure to the corruption.
Chapter 9 of Uprooted from Sarkan's point of view.
This is a rewrite of Uprooted from Sarkan's point of view – it follows the story of Uprooted very closely and will spoil stuff if you've not read the book. The characters, the story, and dialogue between Agnieszka and Sarkan belong to Naomi Novik – I've added some extra, but most of the dialogue is NN's and not mine.

Summary
I felt it build, the strength of my magic turning her blood to fire beneath my fingers. There was nothing else in my mind but the heat and the light. Too much and I could burn all of her away; too little and Wood’s poison would hide in the deep recesses of her body, and I would lose her to a different kind of ruin.
Our hero waits for Agnieszka to return from the Wood - but will it be her that escapes from beneath the trees, or something else entirely? And will he be able to save her?
Chapter 8 of Uprooted from Sarkan's point of view.

The characters, the story, and dialogue between Agnieszka and Sarkan belong to Naomi Novik – I've added some extra, but most of the dialogue is NN's and not mine.

Summary
So, the next day, I did what any self-respecting wizard would do, and hid – in my laboratory, the doors closed firmly behind me. I busied myself with my work, with brewing potions and mending tools; none of it was urgent, but I lent myself to it with a feverish intensity.
Oh no. In this chapter, Sarkan has some feelings to wrestle with (perhaps the corruption was easier) and handles it the only way he knows how - by hiding. Looks like he isn't going to be talking to Agnieszka for some time, but they're prevented from completely ignoring each other when a distraught woman arrives from Dvernik...

Summary
I don’t remember reaching her room, or her levering me down onto the bed. I existed only at the threshold of the corruption, a last border drawn between the Wood and myself. Still, I felt her departure, a sudden coldness of absence where she had hovered by my side: I was alone.
Chapter 6 of Uprooted from Sarkan's point of view. Our hero is corrupted! And the cure turns out to quite possibly be worse than the disease, seeing as how it completely defies everything Sarkan's ever believed in. And what's Agnieszka doing with that confounding blossom? Warning: contains feelings.
This is a rewrite of Uprooted from Sarkan's point of view – it follows the story of Uprooted very closely and will spoil stuff if you've not read the book. The characters, the story, and dialogue between Agnieszka and Sarkan belong to Naomi Novik – nearly all of the dialogue in this chapter is Novik’s, not mine.
This was a weird project which came out of the COVID-19 pandemic, when it got hard to concentrate on my own writing and this seemed like a suitably mad thing to get into.

Summary
There was a chance this one had simply woken hungry on a particularly warm winter’s day, just as there was a chance that the girl would manage to keep herself out of trouble for the duration of my absence. I did not believe either circumstance to be particularly likely.
Chapter 5 of Uprooted from Sarkan's point of view. In which he has some feelings, fights a chimaera, rides to Dvernik, and has a very bad end to his day.
This is a re-write of Uprooted from Sarkan's point of view – it follows the story of Uprooted very closely and will spoil stuff if you've not read the book. The characters, the story and dialogue between Agnieszka and Sarkan belong to Naomi Novik, though in this chapter I've filled in a lot of stuff we don't see in the original book.

Summary
I held onto her arm as I led her down to kitchen, unwilling to let go in case she flung herself at my back and made another attempt on my life. What a fine joke that would be: Sarkan, the Dragon, greatest wizard of Polnya, killed on his stairs by a witless peasant. Maybe the Wood would laugh itself into oblivion.
This is a rewrite of 'Uprooted' by Naomi Novik, written from the Dragon's point of view.
It follows the chapters of the book very closely, just retelling the story from his POV. If you enjoy a cranky wizard, or want to hear Sarkan's cutting internal remarks about the state of Agnieszka, then this fic is for you. This frankly insane project has come out of the Covid-19 pandemic, where we all need something fun to keep us going during these times. Made with all my love for Naomi Novik and her wonderful book.
