He sighed, knowing that that was as close to a yes as he was going to get. “Okay. You know we all care about you, right? You may not have been here for long, but we all want to help you.”
After a moment of hesitation, Tommy nodded.
“Good, good. That’s good. We just want you safe and happy.” Grian took a deep breath. “Tommy, before… before a few days ago, had you ever considered hurting yourself?”

Gillion Tidestrider, Champion of the Undersea, is used to unsteady waters. He has stayed strong in uncertain waters, when the current threatens to drag him to the very depths.
On land, Gillion is…not used to how unsteady he feels. And not just when he’s walking, on earth that doesn’t move beneath his feet, that doesn’t anticipate his every move.
Gill stumbles as he crosses from the Albatross onto dry ground, and her arm shoots out to steady him. “Thank you, Jay.”
“Course,” she says, squeezing his forearm gently. “Now! We need some more rice…” her sharp eyes scan the market stall signs as they come into view, and her hand slips from his arm to hold onto his hand, carefully minding the webbing between them. She squeezes his hand and he squeezes back.

Summary
Chip James moves to Allport, the port city of Mana, in the hopes of starting over in a new place. He tries his luck at the Albatross, a popular bar and restaurant in the city center, and finds the beginnings of a new family. He also meets Gillion, a mysterious, keeps to himself cook that piques Chip's curiousity in everything he does.
An awkward beginning leads to a close friendship (and a serious crush on the triton in Chip's case) that gets flipped on his head when his best friend is getting married, and asks him to be her best man. That's fine! Chip would be honored to accept the role from Lizzie. The real problem comes when he learns one of the other bridal party members is his ex, and she's bringing an unwanted plus one.
Chip's only solution? Bring a date to the wedding to prove he's moved on. Now he just has to find someone to say yes, even if it's just pretend.
