“In all your years being a trainee, you’ve really never snuck out past curfew before?” He whispered fervently as they waited for the footsteps to quieten down.
“I know our first encounter might have painted me a certain way, but no Venti, I do not make a habit of breaking rules,” Xiao whispered back.

Summary
It is duty that drives Xiao to wake up as the sun rises and perform his polearm drills until the late evening.
It is duty that keeps Xiao going during tough expeditions to rid Liyue of the demons that lurk in the shadows, his body aching for rest.
And it is duty that finds Xiao kneeling in front of a wall of wind, waiting for Zhongli to finish transcribing what he dictated to him, watching the slanted letters form upon the piece of paper on the table before them. Across the wall, neither able to be seen nor heard, sits his future husband.
When Xiao comes of age, he begins the five-year process of acquainting himself with his future husband: the wind vessel of Mondstadt.

High up on the cliff that borders the ocean and the quiet fishing village, there stands a lone bird statue facing away from the ocean, wings spread open as if it were mid-flight. His mother always told him to remember two important things when visiting the statue:
One: It liked being pat on the head.
Two: It can grant wishes if you ask nicely. Sometimes.
But Xiao thinks there’s a third important thing that should be added to the list:
Three: If you talk to it, it’ll use the wind to talk back to you. And it really, really likes to talk.

“Xiao,” Venti repeats again.
Xiao lifts his head slightly from where it rests in Venti’s palm, smiling at the sound of his name from Venti’s lips. “Yeah?”
It is still the same smile Venti had fallen in love with over burnt eggs. It’s the same smile, but somehow, it’s a little more worn, a little more tired. It is a smile that looks like it has loved a little too much at all the wrong times, and it is now fractured at the corners and seams.
“This isn’t making you happy anymore, is it?” he asks gently.
