Max stared at nothing and didn’t move. She gripped her walkie-talkie like it was her only anchor to the world, which it kind of was. She wasn’t sure how long she’d been sitting here in the closet she used to use to hide, thoughts creeping into her head and preparing to strangle her.
She clicked the button on her walkie-talkie. She couldn’t get her voice to rise above a whisper. “Steve, can you come get me?”

Summary
Dustin lingers on Steve’s doorstep for a good ten minutes before he knocks. He knows Steve’s parents are gone—locked out by the quarantine—but he’s worried somehow anyway. Or maybe he doesn’t want to ruin Steve’s night. He might’ve cared about that, in the beginning.
When he does knock, and Steve does open the door, Dustin has this whole plan of what to say. Everyone’s fine, he’ll say, because Steve will think the monsters are back. I’m fine, he’ll say next, because Steve will think he’s dying. Sorry about your doormat, he’ll joke, because there’s blood in the center of the O in WELCOME.
Instead, he bursts into tears.

Summary
Dustin discovers that pain is very useful when he needs a distraction from every emotion threatening to break him down. He doesn't want his friends to stop him from hurting himself, and brushing away their concern is easy when every injury is because of accidents or assholes beating him up. They don't need to know that the accidents were preventable and the assholes provoked.

Summary
“Is he like this with everyone?”
Dustin pretends he can’t hear the question. Or the rest of the conversation.
“Just… he’s always angry and yelling at me, and I was wondering if I did something to piss him off eternally, or if he’s like that with everyone.”
Instead, he stares at the floor and holds the ice pack to his face. He’s held it there for too long and it hurts. He doesn’t move it away.
