Summary
It all happened so quickly, like a mirage in a hot desert.
Humans had arrived in their shiny metals and naked bodies, carrying sticks of glistening silver and shields that carried the heavy scent of death. They were here, not for rescue or aid, but for cruel, bitter warfare. They were striking when the anvil was at its hottest, and your kind were all half-dead, diseased by a pestilence unknown. There was no possible way of fruitful retaliation. And there was nothing you could do, even if you tried.
Collect your silver tears, pray I reappear tomorrow.

Anya gasps hysterically, on the brink of a collapse. She rocks herself back and forth, desperate for any kind of release that will save her from this hell. A hug, a pat on the back, a “We’ll get through this, Anya.” —anything!

Summary
And although the temperature runs warm, Jasper continues to card through Teryl’s hair like they were fine strands belonging to a goddess of gold. Praying to every fiber on Teryl’s head like it was gospel—and with how it glows in the filtered sunlight, Jasper isn't wrong in assuming so.
Teryl shifts, his head brushing against Jasper’s fingers. He flips a page in his book, his fingers tracing the outline of the pages, his eyes fixed on the first word but his mind unreading. He opens his mouth, takes in an anxious breath, and speaks.
“I love you.”
Sometimes love confessions shouldn't be spoken aloud, forever kept within your heart like a prison.

Summary
She read, and she read, and she read, and all she could do was read. Every single book laid out before her in this egg she struggled to get out of—for her egg tooth could never hope to pierce what kept her captive for so long—she had read from cover to cover. Each story, each book, was unique in its own way. These books kept her sane when her thoughts did not.
Es tells the Wanderer a story. A story that might change their outcome.
