Summary
Nancy Wheeler is following all of the steps on the path to a happy life for an ambitious woman of the late 80s, with what she hopes is just enough deviation from the norm to keep her from feeling suffocated. She can see that life with Jonathan - a perfectly balanced domestic bliss that won't condemn either of them to the fate of their respective parents.
Their move to New York City is one of those steps. She will build a meaningful career, follow her passions, and save up enough money for a condo on the West end where she can ride the subway to the theatre with Jonathan on a Saturday evening in a black cocktail dress.
The thing about the Lower East Side of New York City is that it doesn't really give a shit about Nancy's carefully crafted plans. Instead, the Lower East Side of New York City drops Robin Buckley into the zebra-printed vinyl booth across from her, with her Lavender Menace pin and her pink triangle patch, and sends Nancy into a tailspin that changes her course for good.

Summary
Mike Wheeler hated his sister's boyfriends. It wasn't complicated, it was moral principle.
Steve Harrington was a jock. A hair-product-using, car-polishing, dumb-smiling jerk. Mike was a nerd. By the rules of nature and comic book law, Mike was obligated to hate him.
Then came Jonathan. He had known him almost as long as he had known Will. Quiet. Awkward. Supposedly "nice". Except the Wheeler household had thin walls, and he had heard too many late-night muffled sobs over the phone.
Conclusion: Boyfriends = bad. Boyfriends = tears. Boyfriends = Mike Wheeler's sworn enemy.
So when Nancy starts to act happy and giddy, and Mike swears he heard her giggle over the phone. Nancy Wheeler. GIGGLE! He starts to get suspicious and recruits none other than the party to help him figure it out.

Summary
Then the doorbell rings, jolting through the humid air, and—
—there she is.
Dark curls bouncing. Skin glowing gold in the sun. A skirt that sways to the rhythm of her strut.
Nancy Wheeler.
Robin's breath catches in her throat.
Her pulse thuds. Once. Twice.
The question slips out before she can stop it.
"Are you still in love with her?"
Steve whips his head toward her, and not a single hair moves out of place.
God, she hates him.
His mouth falls open, fish-out-of-water wide. "Wha—what?"
~
Robin is deeply in love, and Nancy is definitely in control. Until she isn't.
