Just because he had extremely bad luck the townspeople called him a curse and avoided him like the plague.
If he so much as looked in someone's direction they would spout how 'he's a curse from the gods!' Or 'he's the reason the well and streams are drying up!' And utter bullshit like that.
He swears that the townspeople just use the excuse that he has bad luck to dump their problems on him. If they really hate him so much he doesn't know why they don't drive him out of the town if he's such an inconvenience to them. They would probably celebrate if he left anyway.

Ok, in full honesty this wasn't Tommy's fault.
Tommy was just walking down the street just a couple blocks away from his house when he was snatched into an alleyway and put to sleep. He truly had nothing to do with it and he totally didn't put a target on his back when he punched that one gang member in the face...but that's besides the point! And the dude definitely deserved it he looked at him funny!

Tommy gets put in a hostage situation with some familiar faces and somehow becomes friends with a raccoon along the way
