No one in the Seven Kingdoms could deny that Ned Stark was an honorable man. It was a well known fact, just as it was known that Lannisters paid their debts and Greyjoys weren’t to be trusted. Ned Stark’s honor was not something that could be denied. Not even when he came back to Winterfell with a bastard daughter named Lyra.
Even when he had dishonored his wife by siring a bastard, people still talked of his honor. Raising the bastard girl in his ancestral home, providing for her, giving her an opportunity to find a match once she is grown.
When they talked of his honor, they didn’t think of his dishonor or the mistakes he made. For his entire life, he was vaulted as this paragon of honor and justice. But he wasn’t. Not truly. Not when it came to Lyra or the promise he made in the days that had followed her birth. They were right to claim that Lyra was his greatest dishonor and shame, but they were wrong in the reasoning.
