“Dispatch, the main staircase has collapsed, any other way out?” TK’s voice finally came through. That did not however sound promising.
“There is another staircase on the back, but you’ll have to cross the ground floor all the way to the other side to get out. If the fire is still raging-” Carlos was saying.
“We’ll be trapped, got it,” TK finished for him. “Okay, how do we get there?” he asked after a one second pause. And Carlos really didn’t want to send them into a trap any more than they wanted to walk into it, but it was still the only way out. Assessing the risk was part of their job, if they were standing on the scene asking Carlos to lead the way, it meant they knew as much. Carlos had to get them out.
