David loved working at Camp Campbell--Every year he looked forward to the summer where he could leave the city and head with his ward, Max, to the camp in the forest where he could truly be himself and this year was no different.
Well, maybe a little. This year, his boss Cameron Campbell had supposedly hired new camp counsellors to help David and Gwen out. David's ecstatic, Max isn't.
But life is always changing in the real world and sometimes, that change can be good.

She was it.
She . . . she was it?
Not that she wasn't lovely, she was — far more than he deserved, to be sure. And there was a strange, fragile toughness in the way she carried herself, hesitant but defensive, that made him want to give her a hug. (Well, he usually wanted to give people hugs, to be fair. She just looked like she could use one.) But she was watching him guardedly, warily, ready to bolt.
She . . . didn't look very impressed with him. Not that he could blame her, exactly, but he'd expected meeting his soulmate to feel a bit more . . . soulmate-y.
It certainly had the first time.

Jasper has always tried to make himself appear more confident than he actually is. He likes to goof off and tease and make people laugh. He’s good at it too. Good at putting on a show and making people feel at ease. He’s happiest when he can let his brain-to-mouth filter shut off and act like a total dork. And he’s lucky enough to have found two people who love that about him. Or at least he thought he had.

Being asked to attend a wedding with Mr Campbell was an honour for David, one he got a bit too excited about Gwen told him as he got ready the morning before the event, but David dismissed it as frustration because she was left to take care of the kids while he was gone.

“Right,” David blew a breath out, and straightened his shoulders. “Max’s parents are on holiday, and his grandmother isn’t able to care for him, and the alternative was him staying alone in his house and well. I told his grandma that we could take care of him for the next month.”
Jasper didn’t say anything, but David could hear him breathing, one, two, one two. He was fucked.
Or, sometimes a family is two childhood sweethearts, their oversized mammoth of a dog, and their camp son.

Summary
Working at Camp Campbell for the past few summers - Max, Nikki, and Neil have seen some real weird kids. However, it was nothing they couldn't handle. But what happens when they come across an angry red head named Davey out to cause chaos, Gwen; a cynical little girl with a dry sense of humor, and of course, Jasper, a happy ball of sunshine with too much love for the camp?
This summer is going to be a long one.

Jasper can't stop pacing back and forth in the living room, because he can hardly contain his nervous excitement over finally being able to raise a child with David. David met this child at his summer job at Camp Campbell, and he needed a new family after being orphaned by his neglectful parents. Perhaps something good can finally come out of that crappy place. And maybe Jasper can finally be the cool dad he's always wanted to be!
It's just a shame that his new son is nowhere near as enthusiastic about the family life as he is.
