    Summary

    “Astra Yao must die.”

In the silence after the command, Evelyn hears the instructions she’s been drip-fed over the years she has been at Astra’s side: “Degrade her. Make her die in infamy. Destroy any good reputation she has left.”

Evelyn would prefer a quiet knife in the night.

Evelyn is issued the kill order on Astra. Astra does not make it easy on her.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Having a premise of a superstar and her bodyguard/undercover assassin sent to kill her but ends up falling for her shouldn't be this interesting but it really is when the writer follows the natural conclusion of such a setup without shying away from the assassination part.

And the delicious part is, the superstar knows and still willingly flirts with very real danger.

“I’m like a kitten in your hands. So helpless and soft.”

“They used to drown stray kittens in my neighborhood when I grew up,” she says, running water over Astra’s head to rinse out the suds.

“How horrible,” Astra murmurs. “Should I be careful? Would you do that to me?”

Would she do that to you? More like she's currently doing that to you.

Evelyn kneels next to the tub on the hard cold tiles, wanting to grab Astra by her shoulders, wanting to warn her, to protect her, to cover her mouth and never let her speak again when she’s so careless like this, letting an assassin so close.

“It is always wise to be cautious around people, Miss Yao. You never know who might wish you harm.”

Astra meets Evelyn’s gaze, hard and opaque and mesmerizing, all at once, as she takes Evelyn’s soapy hand and closes it around her slender neck, holding them there and slipping under the water’s surface with a peculiar smile on her lips.

This last scene got me. Like literally I can't stop thinking about it. Why, why, why?

I'm so very normal about them right now.

The amusement in Victoria’s eyes heightened. It’s not obvious on her face, but Iris has had enough practice to know that while her facial expression betrays nothing, her eyes did not do the same.

“Miss Wen, you did what I asked.”

    “Yes, we’ve already established that.”

“And you didn’t complain or ask for help.”

“-Are you trying to make me look bad?”

    Or

Iris Wen's time at Huanyu and her discovering why Victoria Qi makes her feel sick.

This fic has been haunting me for at least two weeks. Iris/Victoria is something I really enjoy rotating in my brain. I feel like the combination of an outward people pleaser with a hidden sharp edged tongue x straitlaced high standards executive with a secret soft nurturing side is such a beautiful disaster. Plus, we get Iris feeling all bothered and disgusted whenever Victoria is even a little nice and appreciative of her work which is just 100% in character.

“Executive Qi,” Iris curls her lips into an insincere smile. “Would you have believed me if I had told you that department head Liu was just sitting on his chair, doing nothing while I had to take on the project lead?”

Victoria responds immediately, a satisfied expression on her face. “Yes.”

Her eyebrow twitches, and she stares at her, stunned. Something bubbles up inside her, and it was an unfamiliar feeling. It makes Iris feel very sick, and she covers her mouth as she begins to feel nauseous.

    Summary

What can you do with regret? So little. What can you do without it? Kafka’s repeated history is a holy scripture of it.

It’s why Kafka has dashed herself against Himeko again and again, expecting nothing different, and yet each time, it’s a new life, a new horror, a new delight.

Kafka is playing out the script in a time loop. If something goes wrong, it’s not a problem: just die and start over. She’s on her 996th, soon to be 997th, loop. And sweet, darling, horrible Himeko shouldn’t remember a thing, so she can repeat their mistakes over and over — that is, until Himeko finds a cryptic message that messes her perfect looping life up.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Okay so, I have picked up this fic over and over again but only recently finished it. I had to percolate it in my mind for 2 weeks just to process all my revelations and just lie down somewhere from all the implications (in a good way). I feel this has infected my brain and I'm unwell.

“If fear can be cut out of someone, so can love.”

“Not if I let it infect every part of me, lace every thought and emotion with slivers of you. Contaminated beyond all hope of quarantine.”

“You would do that to yourself just to what, win over me?”

    “To lose to you.”

“I will live a thousand lives like this. I have chosen you over and over. I will keep coming back for you.”

    “Kafka…”

“Over and over. Do you understand?”

    “That isn't love. It’s obsession.”

    “What is the difference?”

This is such peak toxic yuri. I'm like, yes, choose her over and over again. Compound the mistakes in search of that perfect loop that you've touched once before. The rest of the world can burn. Over a thousand loops. A thousand lifetimes.

    Bookmarker's Notes

So much of Iris/Selene's dynamic is built on the ruins of their past relationship. All the unmet wants and needs, and now that Selene is finally starting to move on, Iris comes back offering everything on a silver platter with juat one tiny request: that Selene would stay by her side forever. Literally.

This fic is such a good follow up to Iris' Bad Ending because it follows the natural conclusion from the visual novel and Iris' is so interesting because she's insane but also desperately to please Selene and make her stay forever. And she'll do anything, say anything, except let Selene leave.

Iris let out a pleased hum, eyes lighting in a frenzy. “I love you,” she murmured in between kisses. “I love you…”

Selene’s heart clenched at Iris’s words. Was this really love? Forcing your feelings on someone and hurting each other in turn?

    “You’re crazy,” Selene protested weakly.

“Yes, I’m crazy,” Iris agreed easily. “Insane. Depraved. Psychotic.”

“I knew you were soft,” Kafka says, not derisively, but rather as if she’s... Fond. Falling.

    Tingyun could say the same.

    Bookmarker's Notes

After letting the thoughts ferment after a week or so, I realize I needed to leave a review to exorcise the demons and get a semblance of a normal life again (half-jokingly).

But really. This is so terrifically good that it altered my brain chemistry for a bit. I've been unwell.

Firstly, so I can pitch this properly, we have unwilling to willing participant in one's ruination, a hot dangerous middle aged woman who's trouble on two legs (fondly), the gunplay that went harder and hotter than I initially expected and excellent character arc and realizations.

    Secondly, I come with quotes!

“Stop talking,” Tingyun says, breathing hard and fast. “Just stop trying to make me into something like you.

“Let me show you.” Kafka positions it in her hands, closing her fingers around the weapon. “Here. Safety.” She flicks it off, her breathing growing heavy.

“Kafka…” Tingyun says her name like she might be calling for a lover leaving her, she knows this, and it’s terribly vulnerable of her.

Tingyun slaps Kafka’s cheek while holding her head in place, and the sting of it transforms Kafka’s face. She goes through the stages of shock, pain and then the unfurling pleasure, it’s sickening to see. She’s not normal. She’s not sane. She’s a terrible danger that threatens to undo everything about Tingyun’s comfortable and cushy life.
