“I need you to listen carefully,” Andrew began, waiting until Neil nodded before continuing. “I’m going back to Palmetto with Coach and Kevin, but I’ll come find you as soon as I can. I need to get these drugs out of my system first. I can’t think straight with this shit in me. In the meantime, you’re going to get your damn bag and rent a decent hotel room where you can rest until your classes are over. You are not going to run, and you’re going to buy a fucking cell phone. Am I clear, rabbit?”
“I understand,” Neil whispered, trying to absorb Andrew’s steadiness, trying to believe in that absurd and ridiculous possibility. He closed his eyes for a moment and took a deep breath, allowing the feeling of Andrew’s touch to anchor him in reality. “I trust you. I’ll do what you said.”
Andrew loosened his grip slightly but remained close.
“Good,” he murmured, much more softly this time. “If you disappear, I’ll kill you.”

Summary
He bangs out the backdoor and is immediately met with the sight of Jean stumbling over, Neil in his arms. Neil, whose face is death-white and his shirt soaked with blood. His arm is thrown loosely around Jean’s neck, his head flopped against Jean’s shoulder. His eyes are a thousand miles away.
“Give him to me,” Andrew demands. Jean meets him in the middle, transferring Neil gingerly into Andrew’s arms. Jean’s entire torso is covered in blood. He doesn’t know if it’s Neil’s or his own. Once Neil is firmly in Andrew’s grip, his head rolls back. His teeth are pink when he grins up at Andrew.
“Hey,” he greets. Like it’s any other day. He stinks of iron.

“Have you considered the possibility that Neil has chosen you, but believes you have not chosen him?” Renee says. "Have you ever explicitly told him what you want?”
“Neil knows what I want,” Andrew snaps. This is not Andrew’s fault.
“How do you know?”
Because Neil always knows. He is as fluent in Andrew’s micro-expressions as he is in German and French. He knows which head tilts mean “go on” and which ones mean “shut up.” Without ever asking, he learned what it meant to see Andrew wearing double layers of long sleeves, or taking multiple showers in a day, and learned to hand Andrew the car keys.
That has always been the most terrifying thing about Neil — his patience to wait, watch, listen, learn. The prospect that if Neil were given enough time, there would be no part of Andrew that was just Andrew’s anymore.
“He has to know,” Andrew says.
“Does he?” Renee says. “Have you ever known Neil to assume that he is wanted?”
Five times Neil tells someone that he and Andrew aren’t dating, and one time Andrew uses his words to set the record straight.

Before he can tune them out as background noise, he hears his name.
"...definitely toxic. I mean, Andrew drives him everywhere, drags him out of parties early, doesn't let him talk to anyone else... I overheard Aaron telling Kate that Andrew picks Neil's clothes out for him, that's controlling as shit."
"Yeah, more like emotionally abusive. I don't get why the others don't do anything about it, though, like, if there was even a chance Neil would listen to me I'd be trying to rescue that poor boy."
"He probably doesn't even realize he needs rescuing, though, right? Like, that's how abusive relationships work. Besides, you know what his life's been like, with parents like his he might not know what a healthy relationship even looks like. And the others are probably too scared of Andrew to intervene."
