“Just leave me,” Newt pleaded faintly. It had to be the sixth or seventh time he'd made that request. His voice came out strained, haggered. The effort stung his dry throat. His mouth felt sticky when he spoke, the taste of something bitter and acidic clinging to his teeth. As the black saliva dribbled down his chin, Newt could feel his humanity slipping away. That thought made his frail heartbeat quicken with fear. Nobody acknowledged his request.
