Dream holds the weight of the world on his shoulders, he has to keep up a smile and happy demeanor- he's the guardian of positivity! But... he's been bottling up all of the bad feelings.
One day he can't keep those feelings bottled up anymore, and he becomes a beacon of his misery.
Nightmare doesn't give up the chance to try and exploit that. -
