Summary
There was a sudden howl outside, a gust against the door that made it rock in its frame. The light was fading fast, and Wei Wuxian couldn’t help but think of all the things that might be in these mountains, supernatural or not.
“Ah what I wouldn’t give for a jar of wine,” he said, speaking over his fear, tamping it down. “Even just ordinary village wine. How will we while away the evening by the fire? I don’t suppose you know any interesting stories.”
“No,” Lan Zhan said, shortly.
“Or campfire songs,” Wei Wuxian mused. “I know you have your guqin, but it isn’t the same. Well, it’ll have to be a game of questions, then.”
He glanced up and over at Lan Zhan, hoping to catch a grimace of dismay. Lan Zhan did not disappoint. Maybe other people wouldn’t have read that slight contraction of Lan Zhan’s perfect features the same way, but Wei Wuxian wasn’t other people. He laughed.
“First question,” he said. “What’s it like being an alpha?”

"Pop some bread in the toaster for me?” Wei Ying asks. Lan Zhan has one, a chrome thing with dials and buttons.
A pause. “This isn’t a relationship,” Lan Zhan says.
Wei Ying blinks. It’s such an incongruous thing to say. At first his brain says, that must be code. It’s almost like listening to two spies talk in a drama. The handler would say something like ‘the duck swims at midnight,’ and the spy would say, ‘purple is the loveliest colour’ and they’d both nod to each other and know that the prime minister was about to be assassinated, or something. That’s all he can think of, at first. Because of course this isn’t a relationship? This was a fun night. So Lan Zhan must be saying this for a reason. There’s some response he’s supposed to make now, but he’s lost the script if he ever had it.
“Okay…” he says. Then it clicks. Lan Zhan means: you should leave.

He's at the forefront of the group of Lan cultivators and if the pulsing darkness pushes Wei Wuxian's eyes away, then Lan Zhan draws them like there's nothing else worthy of looking at.
Wei Wuxian shakes his head at himself. He's been on the road too long. He's thinking in lines of poetry.
