“Seems easy enough.” Charles can’t help but appreciate the potential of a simple case.
It’s been longer than either of them would admit, since they had anything close to an easy win, job well jobbed, et cetera. Everything since Port Townsend has felt heavy, with the weight of someone’s existence always hanging in the balance: hell and Esther Finch and Niko.
They could all use this, Charles thinks. A distraction, a boost. Anything, really, to get Edwin out of the office and away from the things putting shadows under his eyes. Here, at least, it might be something Charles can hit.
A new case and recurring thoughts about Edwin's collarbones remind Charles of the past. Aka, Charles Rowland's bisexual awakening, repression, and subsequent reawakening.

“So what’s really going on here?” Mary asks, snapping Ed’s attention back to her. Her brown eyes pierce into his skin and he feels like she’s flaying him open. She always was too fucking perceptive, practically to a fault. “You and him.”
“Nothing,” Ed says. He very carefully does not turn to look at what’s making Stede practically fucking squeal over there.
“Nothing,” she repeats skeptically.
“Nothing,” he confirms.
“Right.” She raises her eyebrows. “Because it looks to me like you’re very in love with him.”
“Nope,” Ed says, popping the p. He makes the mistake of looking across the room where Anne is basically plastered to Stede’s arm, her hand creeping its way down to the small of his back. He curls his free hand into a fist, his nails biting into the flesh.
“Very convincing,” she says.
“Fuck off.”
“I like him,” she says, seemingly out of nowhere.
Ed frowns at her. “Okay…”
“Anne likes him too.”
Ed scowls, lifting the joint to his lips to take a drag. “I can tell.”
“So since you’re not interested,” she starts, and Ed narrows his eyes. He doesn’t fucking like where this is going. “You wouldn’t mind if we asked him to stay the night.”
